Vote Albatross Reason 17: Seven kinds of albatross living in our waters are in trouble

Seven kinds of albatross living in our waters are facing population decline. Some of them are being caught by overseas fishing fleets, but it’s not easy to work out why other kinds are declining in number: it’s probably to do with large-scale changes in the ocean, such as changing temperatures and currents affecting their food supply. In this recent podcast from Our Changing World on Radio New Zealand National you can hear about Gibson’s wandering albatross in the Auckland Islands and how their population has declined by 50% in the last 15 years http://www.radionz.co.nz/national/programmes/ourchangingworld/audio/2564159/wandering-albatrosses Photo of a white-capped albatross by Malcolm Francis
